Tasty Travels: New York – Part 1

Even though we were only in New York for a week I managed to taste lots of different foods in lots of different areas. So much in fact that this post will have to be split in to two parts! This time of year in New York is amazing. We watched the speedy transition from Thanksgiving to Christmas happen overnight with the shops covered in lights and decorations. It was really special and we made sure we saw all the festive department stores, giant trees and holidays sights. We visited loads of  locations such as Greenwich, Uptown, Williamsburg and Soho. Not only did I hunt down different cakes and sweets but also indulged in some amazing savoury food like sandwiches, pizza and an epic breakfast…

One of the first places we went to was the food court at the Plaza. We ducked in after a cold walk in Central Park and it was amazing, full of little stands packed with macaroons, chocolate, pies, sandwiches and cakes. I chose a vanilla cupcake from Billy’s Bakery and spent a while admiring their counter full of cakes and pretty packaging. My sister and I spent an afternoon wandering around Greenwich. I was really excited to stumble upon Murray’s Cheese store after remembering it was mentioned in this blog post. One of the best things about this cheese shop is that it doesn’t smell like cheese! So. Good. It was also full of pasta, bread and other treats. The cool thing about this shop is that they have a place for cheese tasting classes at the back. Will have to go back for one of these one day! We found the shop just at lunch time so I opted for a grilled cheese sandwich with tomato and bacon. It was filled with delicious hot melty cheese which kept me nice and warm.
I love taffy. Something tells me I shouldn’t but I do. Its so salty and yummy and I get a little sad at how little I see it over here. I found this pack in a shop in Greenwich although I saw packs all over the city. When I spotted this taffy in pumpkin pie flavour I was beside myself. It’s currently half consumed and living in my handbag as I attempt to savour it and munch on it when I need a pick me up.I visited Georgetown Cupcakes on a recommendation so I had kind of hyped myself up for some amazing cake action. They looked so pretty all perfectly displayed on stands with gorgeous simple decorations in the pristine pink and white shop, but it just didn’t taste as good as I wanted it to. Maybe I’ll just have to try them again in DC! Part 2 coming soon…
